What is Composite bonding?

The procedure gets its name because materials are bonded to the tooth. Bonding is typically used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of a stained, uneven or chipped teeth and can be used to close gaps between teeth. Bonding involves the application of a tooth-colored resin material and adhesive to the natural tooth which is then hardened using a high intensity curing light.

Getting composite bonding involves no drilling of your own teeth, and no injections, so it is effectively a pain-free cosmetic solution.

  • Composite bonding involves the application of a resin material to teeth, aiming to repair or improve their color and shape. This technique is named for the process of bonding the resin to the tooth's surface. It effectively addresses issues like chips, worn edges, translucency, and slight misalignments. Additionally, it can fill gaps and restore the teeth's natural appearance.

  • Composite bonding encompasses both veneers and edges, depending on the application area. Composite veneers cover the entire tooth with resin, providing a comprehensive enhancement. In contrast, composite edges focus on the tooth's bottom third, offering a subtle improvement to the tooth's appearance.

  • During a consultation, we'll recommend the best option based on your needs and the condition of your teeth. If your teeth are already straight and of a satisfactory color, composite edges might suffice, offering a slight, natural enhancement. Conversely, composite veneers are ideal for those seeking significant changes in color, alignment, or symmetry.

  • Composite veneers are a non-invasive option that adds material over your teeth, requiring no drilling or injections, and can be completed in one visit, lasting about 5-7 years. Porcelain veneers, however, involve removing a layer of enamel and require two appointments over a couple of weeks, with a lifespan of over 15 years.

  • Composite bonding typically lasts 5-7 years, influenced by factors like oral hygiene, diet, and habits like teeth grinding. Regular dental check-ups and maintenance can extend its longevity.

  • To maintain composite bonding, we recommend daily flossing, bi-annual dental cleans, and the use of a night guard for those who grind their teeth, ensuring the longevity of the bonding.

  • While composite bonding can mask gaps or minor crookedness, achieving naturally straight teeth may require treatments like Invisalign. A consultation will determine the most suitable approach for your case.

  • Just like natural teeth, composite materials can accumulate stains over time. To keep both your teeth and composite enhancements looking brighter for longer, it's advisable to limit the intake of highly staining beverages, such as coffee. Regular maintenance, including cleanings and polishes every six months, plays a crucial role in preserving the luster of your composite bonding. We employ a specialised technique using an Aquacare machine, which combines polishing grains with high-pressure water to meticulously clean even the hard-to-reach areas between your teeth.

You can also bleach your teeth after bonding once every three months and this helps keep those stains away if you just aren’t prepared to ditch the caffeine 😁

  • Composite bonding cannot be applied over crowns. If a crown is part of the teeth being treated, it may need replacement to match the composite bonding for a uniform appearance.
