Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought ’Gosh, I look tired’?
As we age the elasticity in our skin deteriorates and gravity pushes our muscles downwards. And whilst this can look attractive on men – on women it doesn’t translate as well.
The general acceptance of what makes a woman attractive and youthful is wide apart eyes that are open – looking alert and happy and a friendly upturned mouth. As the skin droops downwards it can distort our features – especially around the eye area, and our faces take on a different appearance. It almost certainly gives a constantly tired – somewhat angry, brooding – look.
Botox targets three main areas:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines and
- Crows feet
How does botox work?
Injecting Botox into the affected area, temporarily paralyses the underlying muscle responsible for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance. The wrinkles become smoother or disappear altogether.
How long does it last?
Botox takes 2-14 days to take full effect and last 3-4 months
What is the process?
Nicola or Catherine on examination shall assess the best treatment and product for your needs to give safe, long lasting results.
The area to be injected is cleansed. A series of small injections (6 or 7 per area) are placed. These are not painful (an anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand and acts immediately)
The procedure lasts a few minutes.
Are there any side effects?
Most common is the effect of ptosis, or eyelid droop. This condition occurs in less than 3% of injections. It is temporary and will usually resolves before the Botox® wears off.
After injection it is possible to get bruising which is usually minimal and temporary. Localized hypersensitivity to the saline may also occur temporarily. In the 16 years that Botox® has been approved for use, there has never been a reported allergic reaction.
Before having botox I was told a lot of the time that I looked tired. Since having botox I am told on a regular basis that I look fresh and I look great. This has done wonders for my confidence. It is nice to look in the mirror and like what you see. I take more pride in my appearance and love how it has made me feel happier within myself. I will definitely be having botox again as it is money well spent with great results. This is unlike the fortune I used to spend on face creams that promised the world yet done nothing. Before having this treatment my main worry was being left with a frozen appearance. I have to reassure anyone who would be considering the treatment that this is not the case at all and I still have a natural movement to my face, just not as many lines showing!Jane, Ahoghill
The Ageing Face
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance within the body which is found in the deep layers of our skin. It provides support and structure to the skin, keeping it smooth and healthy and protects it from damage. However, as we get older, our body gradually reduces production of HA resulting in visible signs of ageing:
- Skin becomes dehydrated, losing its radiance and youthful appearance
- Natural lines and wrinkles deepen
- Lips lose their fullness
- Cheeks lose volume
- Lines appear around the mouth and nose area
In addition, weight loss often results in loss of volume in the facial area which can lead to a gaunt look.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are a man-made, gel-like substance based on HA. Once injected into the area of concern, they replace the lost volume, plump out the skin and restore our once youthful appearance.
Results can be seen immediately. Within 2-3 days the product has settled to give a very natural and subtle enhancement, which can last as long as 18 months in some clients.
What Areas Can be Treated?
- Any lines that are present at rest, e.g. Frown lines, lipstick lines, nose to mouth lines, mouth to chin lines.
- Cheek enhancement
- Lip enhancement
What Can I Expect?
Following a thorough consultation (including medical history and consent), with either Catherine or Nicola, we will prescribe the appropriate product for your needs.
The area is cleansed, and numbing cream applied. The dermal filler is injected under the surface of the skin. After treatment, there may be some swelling or bruising, both of which will resolve fairly quickly. There are other more serious but extremely rare side effects which will be discussed at your consultation. Careful technique minimises these issues as much as practicable. We also advise avoiding make up in the area for the next 12 hours to reduce the very small risk of infection.
The treatment takes less than 30 minutes to perform, and you will be able to return to your daily routine straightaway.
